De Zeekoe Guest Farm
Oudtshoorn Bed & Breakfast Accommodation
The name De Zeekoe, is derived for the Dutch name for the farm, Zeekoegat, which literally means “hippo waterhole” over a century ago, these odd-looking, water-loving creatures used to frequent the riverbed that still runs through the farm to this very day.
Situated only 7km outside Oudtshoorn, in the Garden Route’s Klein Karoo, surrounded by the famous Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains, is one of the world’s 17 “hot spots” with 3 overlapping flower zones.
De Zeekoe’s unique charm & extraordinary activities attracts guests of a different kind. People from all walks of life visit this stylish lucerne farm in search of a unique experience. Guests can choose between various accommodation types, ranging from stylish rooms at the main house to luxurious cottages with own private pool. This hidden gem has spectacular views with 168 bird species (download bird list) and not the “big 5” but the “shy 5”. About Oudtshoorn
Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world. The world’s biggest bird is just one of the many attractions in this area of exceptional contrasts and natural beauty.
The region is home to the spectacular Cango Caves, Africa’s largest show cave system; an ecological hotspot where three distinct plant biomes (succulent karoo, cape thicket and fynbos) converge; and the Swartberg mountain range, which is part of the Cape Floral World Heritage Site.
De Zeekoe is only a 10 min drive from Oudtshoorn and perfectly based to explore the scenic attractions of the Klein Karoo as well as the natural beauty of the nearby Garden Route.

Social Awareness
We employ and give housing to 20 families on the farm. We aim to positively raise the standard of living and uplift the local community. Generations of our employees and their children have been educated by Zeekoegat Primary. Zeekoegat Primary currently schools 120 primary children and 90 pre-primary children and has been open since 1938. De Zeekoe-trust’s long term goal is to rebuild the whole school, seeing that the school building has become unsafe and unstable. The trust was formed by the adjoining landowners of Safari Ostrich Show Farm.
Through Social Upliftment and addressing the needs of the community, we hope to give these children the tools and the opportunities to improve their lives as well as give them a solid education built on a solid foundation.
With this project we hope to address the needs of this community through the following Key Aspects:
- Improved Medical Health Care and Education.
- Sports and Recreation which will help keep the children busy after school and help develop hidden talents.
- Improve the current Feeding Scheme, many rely on the feeding scheme as their one good meal a day.
- Skills Development for the unemployed.
- Financial Aid for high achieving students, who want to study further but don’t have the finances.
If you are interested in supporting this project, or would like more information, please visit the Zeekoegat School Project website.

EXCELLENT Based on 313 reviews Linda Mertz18/05/2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It's in the middle of nowhere. Beautiful nowhere. Lovely well appointed rooms. Great views/ grounds. I love the swing on my deck and just listening to nature. Love also that they are trying to be sustainable/use local products. The buildings are lovely. Especially like the liquor that is in the room. Not sure what it is exactly but it's good!! Also book the Meerkats! Theo was very helpful with his advice on the area and the Meerkat Experience we were doing at dawn the following day. Unfortunately only stayed one night - would definitely stay again. Cozy bedroom with the most comfortable bed and mosquito net, beautiful bathroom with full bath, shower and separate toilet. Stunner of a balcony! Pool is a bit chilly, but wonderful views all around and plenty of comfortable sunbeds. Dinner was lovely, again - super friendly staff and tasty courses. Meerkat tour nearby is on the property of the Zeekoe so you get a nice discount for booking the activity through them which is an absolute must - these guys are just too cute to miss.
